Some new ideas

At least, I hope these are new ideas.

1) Save the current data set when a player logs off their character and restore it when the player logs onto a new character, or back into the old character.

Right now, CTA discards all its information when you log out or get disconencted. When you login again, either on a different character, or back with the same one, you can easily miss out on a group if you have to wait for someone to advertise it again.

If CTA saved the current data set on logout and restored it on login, this problem would go away.

Of course, there are details about this to work out, like getting rid of old messages if there's a significant period of time between logging out and logging back in, but it's nothing that you can't work out, and the worst possible scenario is that you occasionally have a stale message.

2) Put visible time stamps on messages. I know that you can mouse-over a message and it will say "forwarded 4 minutes ago by..." but a visible time stamp at the right hand edge would be nice.

3) Parse each message for keywords like "Scholo" or "baron" and provide a filter window where you can check boxes off for these instances. If you've checked only "deadmines" and "stockades" then it wouldn't show messages for "baron" or "strat". Make sure to give the option to show or hide those messages where its unable to parse a specific instance name.

4) This goes along with item #3. Make sure to recognize boss names and match them to the corresponding instance even if the instance name isn't mentioned. If someone says "looking for Postmaster group" it should be able to recognize that as being Stratholme, or that "Vancleef" is Deadmines.

5) Please consider moving the tabs currently at the bottom of the window to the top. This would require a lot less mousing-around to get things done. I'd suggest that they go right under the title bar, and that everything else move down a bit to make room. That way, when you click on one of the tabs at the very top, the other tabs will change as needed. It will also be far more intuitive that way, I think, because selecting one of the top tabs will more obviously result in the tabs in the next row changing as needed.

6) Allow the user to specify how long, in minutes, to keep a message before it is discarded.

7) Please consider, at least as an option, the ability to display messages in the format: "{playername} {level} {class} <guildname>: message". It would be nice to see the player's guild without having to mouse over each message.

Maybe the solution would be simply to provide the option for the mouseover format to be the default format that is shown all the time. It would be the "detailed" view while the current view would be the "simple" view, or something like that.

8) Allow the list to be sorted in a couple of different ways... at the least there should be options for sorting by level, or by instance.

9) I dunno if it's possible, but it would be nice to be able to see who else is already in a group, besides the person who advertised it in the LFG/LFM message. Maybe this would be possible only if someone in the group is a CTA user, but even that would be better than nothing.

10) Allow guilds to be added to the blacklist, not just players. Some guilds are notorious for screwing pickup players out of loot, and others are just fronts for gold farmers.

Well, that's all I got for now. Hope you find something useful here.

I'm glad you found my post useful. I'll let you know if anything else comes to mind, and in the meantime I'm gonna go download and try out the new version you just posted.

Yeah those were some great ideas - I will try to implement as many of them as I can in the next beta :)

Not group related but

I love the LFG/LFM filtering capability, but I would like to see it applied to WTB/WTS. Basically, a window that traps the of WTB and WTS messages and permits persistent storage of same. I could see using it for several reasons:

1. Find a professional who makes stuff you are interested in, either as a competitor or as a vendor

2. Find and ID farmers.

3. Keep a price history on certain items.

Others.,

Thoughts?

Hmm.. well I am going to re-write most of CTA's code soon. What I can do is try and re-write it so that the core functions of CTA can be extended to create another similar mod for trade messages only. Just a thought at this point, since I still have to re-organise the code and functions.

It sounds like a good idea for a new addon, but not something that should be part of CALL TO ARMS. I would hate to see the original idea behind CTA suffer because the focus got shifted to other issues.

I agree. I intention is to rewrite the code so that it can be more easily used and extended in another mod entirely :)

Agreed. Extract the engine for a separate add-on where users can specify message tags to track. Keep CTA focused on what it does best. Some may want one or the other, but not both.
